Если прилагательное оканчивается на букву у, которой предшествует согласная, то при добавлении суффиксов
-er/-est

То при добавлении суффикса er, буква е отбрасывается

Конечная согласная удваивается

Эти прилагательные образуют степени сравнения не по правилу:

То буква у меняется на i

прилагательные, которые состоят из двух слогов и имеют окончание

у, образуют степени сравнения путем замены буквы у на i и прибавления суффикса –er в сравнительной степени и суффикса –est в превосходной степени.
Например: funny - funnier - the funniest
heavy - heavier - the heaviest
dirty - dirtier - the dirtiest

двух или более слогов, образуют степени сравнения прилагательных с

помощью слов more (более) и most (самый), которые ставятся перед прилагательными.
More употребляется перед прилагательными в сравнительной степени.
Например: beautiful (красивый) – more beautiful (красивее или
более красивый)
Most употребляется перед прилагательным в превосходной степени.
Например: beautiful – the most beautiful (самый красивый)

красивый и наименее красивый?

Для этого перед прилагательным в сравнительной

степени употребляется слово less (менее),а перед прилагательным в превосходной степени употребляется слово
the least (наименее)

The Thames is long. The Volga is longer. The Irtysh is the longest.
