No longer willing to put up with this life, Catholics led by Robert Catesby organized conspiracy, known in history as "Powder". The idea was simple: on 5 November 1605, James I was to speak before the British Parliament, and the attackers decided to hide in the basement of the house of Lords 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow them up when the king and all the representatives of the Chambers will be inside.
The explosion was supposed to be so powerful that it would carry not only all the buildings of the Parliament, and would destroy all nearby buildings. The plan of this action was to awaken the people and then rule Protestants would be terminated.
Fortunately, this was not to be. One of the conspirators decided to warn the Lord Montengro, that he did not come to the session of Parliament that day by writing him a letter. And the Lord handed the letter to the members and personally to James I. Then king decided to retaliate. He gave no sign that he did not know about the impending plot, and prepared a trap for Catholics.
On the day of execution of criminals who plot against the Crown, the joyful inhabitants of London, whose house was not far from Parliament, decided to celebrate their salvation. They lit in the streets bonfires and burned it in effigy of guy Fawkes.
The authorities of Britain relished this idea, and the 5th day of November quickly turned into a celebration of "guy Fawkes Night", symbolizing loyalty to the king and the monarchy.
Guy Fawkes was the only member of the conspiracy who knew how to handle gunpowder.
Some families in the guy Fawkes Day bake cookies with a surprise in one of them add hot peppers.
