Some interesting facts:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was
born in Edinburgh, in Scotland. He studied medicine and
worked as a doctor for eight years. Then he started writing in order to earn more money. In his first novel A Study in Scarlet (1887), Sherlock Holmes appeared for the first time.
Conan Doyle himself preferred writing novels about history. But people asked for more stories about Holmes. The Hound of Baskervilles was first published in 1902.

Main themes of the book:
- philosophical - how
the mind can run away with superstitious belief if
reasoning is too tied up with emotions.
- psychological - how evil seems to be a part of human nature.
- another psychological theme is loyalty. All of the characters of the story, except for the meanest ones, are highly motivated by their love for others.
