This day is preceded by numerous preparations: every building on the street is decorated in a fairytale style, postcards and presents for family members and friends are bought, evergreen Christmas trees are erected on central squares of each city, Christmas carols are heard everywhere, etc. These preparations can start long before the actual holiday. For example, a month before the air is already filled by the atmosphere of Christmas. Modern stores and malls provide countless sales, which are rather beneficial. American people love to shop before Christmas. They can buy nice dresses and costumes for the coming holiday.

States gained independence as a result of gradual and painful process.
By the mid 1700's, it became difficult for thirteen British colonies in the New World to be ruled by a king 3000 miles across the ocean. The British empire imposed high taxes upon the colonies.
In 1774, the First Continental Congress drew up a list of grievances against the British crown. This document was the first draft of the document that would formally separate colonies from England.
In 1775, the Revolutionary War began. On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress presented a second draft of the list of grievances. On July 4, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of independence. But the War of independence lasted until 1783. After the war Independence Day became an official holiday.

New Year's Eve is a time for entertaining.
Many people

go to parties and masquerade balls, where, according to an old tradition, guests unmask at midnight.
Thousands of Americans gather in Times Square in the heart of New York City, This is probably the noisiest and the most crowded New Year's Eve celebration in the world!
At one minute before midnight, a lighted ball drops slowly from the top of a pole on one of the buildings. People count down at the same time as the ball drops. When it reaches the bottom, bells ring, sirens sound, firecrackers explode, people hug and kiss, and shout "Happy New Year!" Everyone drinks a toast to the New Year and sings "Auld Lang Syne"
It is believed that everything done or not done on the opening day of the year would influence the succeeding twelve months.
Nothing is allowed to be taken out of the house on New Year's Day. Thus, normally generous people would flatly refuse to lend anything on this day.

the first Monday in September. The idea of this holiday is to honour workers in America and to give them a long weekend holiday from work.
Labour Day was started in 1882 by a union called the Knights of Labour. The first celebration was a long parade followed by a picnic in New York City. In 1894 Congress made it a legal holiday.
In America workers were not always treated well. In the early days of the 1800's hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Europe came to the United States. They worked for very little pay. The owners of factories gave them much work paid but little money. The employees had to work 10 to 16 hours a day. Women and children worked cheaper than men.
In the 1800's workers led the fight. They organized the workers in labour unions.

Колумба достигла берегов острова Сан-Сальвадор в Багамском архипелаге, в последствии этот день 12 октября 1492 года был принят за официальную дату открытия Америки, а в 1937 году при президенте Франклине Рузвельте День Колумба стал Государственным праздником, не смотря на то, что для коренных жителей страны этот праздник - день скорби, день когда европейцы принесли на их земли смерть, болезни, нищету.

лет назад День Святого Валентина (Saint Valentine’s Box) стал очень популярным и в России, и в странах СНГ.
Вы, конечно, знаете историю этого праздника. Святой мученик Валентин жил в итальянском городе Терни в III веке. Он тайно венчал влюбленных по христианскому обряду, за что и был казнен властями, так как Римская империя тогда еще была языческой, а христианство было под запретом. С тех пор святой Валентин вошел в историю, как покровитель всех влюбленных, а День Святого Валентина — это день всех влюбленных.
