The London Eye

The London Eye is on
the Thames. It’s the largest observation wheel in the world and it’s very popular with tourists.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a historic building. It is the church where all the kings and queens have been crowned and where many of them are buried. It was founded in 1050 as a monastery. Then it was rebuilt. The west towers were added in the eighteenth century.

Buckingham Palace was built in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 19th century by the architect John Nash. It is a big grey stone building with the flag over it.

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Queen.
If the Queen’s flag flies over the Palace, it means that the Queen is in residence. When the Queen is not in London, the flag is taken down.

The Queen’s Guard leave Buckingham Palace.
This is a traditional ceremony.
It always attracts many tourists..

of the most impressive and popular ceremonies is “Changing the Guard”, which takes place at Buckingham Palace every day, including Sunday, at 11.30. The uniform of the guards is extremely coloured – red tunics, blue trousers and bearskin caps.

The Tate Gallery opened in 1897 and is named after Sir Henry Tate.
Now it is the National Gallery of Modern Painting. There is a large
Collection of European twentieth-century art there.

Trafalgar Square

This famous square is
so named in honour of Britain's great victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at cape Trafalgar of the coast of Spain in 1805 during the Napoleonic war.

Nelson's Column

Nelson’s Column is named after the greatest admiral Lord Nelson. It is a very
tall column and a figure of Nelson is on top of it. Equally famous is the general
who led the army at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. This is the Duke of Wellington.

On the north side of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery. The National Gallery was build in 1824.
The National Gallery has a collection of Italian, Dutch, German and French pictures. It is rich in painting by Italian masters such as Raphael and Veronese.

St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is a masterpiece of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren.
It took him 35 years to construct this beautiful building.
The Cathedral is full of monuments.

The Tower of London is a
very old building. It is more than nine hundred years old.
For many centuries the Tower has been a fortress,
a Royal Palace, a prison and a royal treasury.

It is now a museum of arms and armour, and as one of the strongest fortresses in Britain, it has a Crown Jewels.

The White Tower

The White Tower, a massive building inside the walls, was the place where Kings of England held there Court.

The Ravens

The ravens are another famous sign. The legend
says that without them the Tower will fall.

At present people visit the Tower as a museum to see
old weapons and armour.

The Tower Bridge is a tall structure. It was built across the Thames in 1894 to allow road traffic to pass over it and river traffic to pass under it. Its two halves can go up and down and allow sea-going ships to enter the Pool of London, in the heart of the city.

The National History Museum

The National History museum was first opened to public in April 1881. A museum
is just a department of the British Museum. Today the national History Museum
is famous around the world for its beautiful galleries. The museum is well-known
for its exhibition which include human biology, story of the years discovery mammals.

The Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V & A) is named after Queen Victoria
and her husband, Prince Albert. It grew out of the collection of objects
bought for the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.

The Royal Albert Hall is a huge concert hall gives festivals of popular classical music
concerts every summer.
The programmes include new and contemporary works, as well as classics.

London Buses

Double-decker is a bus with two passenger decks. Double-deckers are a common sight in Britain. London has more than 3,000 double-deckers. In there original form they were ‘hop-on, hop-off’ buses. That is there were no doors. Most double-deckers these days have automatic doors, and you pay fairs to the driver.
Double-deckers have seats for 65 people. Only five people are allowed to stand when the seats are full.
