Christie was one of England`s most famous writers. Her

crime and detective stories became famous for their clever plots. Agatha Christie was often called the Queen of Crime. She wrote 78 detective novels, 19 plays, 150 short stories and 6 romantic novels. Her books have been translated into 103 foreign languages.

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie) was born in Devon,

England on September 15th, 1890 as the daughter of a British army captain. The girl was the youngest child in the family. She was educated at home and took singing lessons in Paris.

During the First World War she worked in a

hospital as a nurse. Later on she got a job in a pharmacy. This influenced many of her crime stories because 83 victims were poisoned.

Agatha married an aviator Colonel Archie Christie, her first husband, in 1914, but in 1928 they divorced. Their daughter was born on 5th August 1919..

The second husband is the archaeologist Max Mallowan, who was younger than her 15 years. In this marriage Agatha lived from 1930 up to the rest of her life.

1920. That was the first appearance of Hercule Poirot, who became one of the most famous private detectives since Sherlock Holmes. He was the main hero of 25 novels. The last Poirot book, «The Curtain» appeared shortly before the writer's death in 1975.

The prototype of Miss Marple was Agatha Christie's grandmother.
The last Miss Marple story, «The Sleeping Murder» and her autobiography were published after her death.
She was the President of the English Club of Detectives from 1958 up to her death.

and it is pleasant to read her books in the original. Her plots always mislead the reader and keep him in suspense. He cannot guess who the criminal is. Fortunately evil is always conquered in her novels.
Her works are the third best-selling books in the world (after Shakespeare's works and the Bible). Many of her novels and short stories have been filmed.
