Smithsonian Institution

1946 by an act of Congress. Some pieces in

the National Air and Space Museum collection date back to the 1876. In 1952 it was placed in the Maryland-National Capital Park.
The Space race in 1950 and 1960 led to the renaming of the museum to the National Air and Space Museum.
The new exhibition hall was opened
in July, 1976.
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center was
opened in 2003.
