“The Backs”. There is the wooden bridge at the back of Queen’s College. It is the “Mathematical” Bridge or Queen’s Bridge.
Clare Bridge is at the back of Clare College. Many people say this beautiful bridge is the best one in Cambridge.
a busy market town. The university grew quickly too. Students and teachers came from Oxford and started their own university in Cambridge. The first university college was Peterhouse College. The Bishop of ELY founded it. He bought 2 houses and gave money to students. The college opened in 1284. In the old college there was also a chapel /a small church/. Many colleges in Cambridge have chapels in them. The first students often had lessons in the chapel.

Not all the university buildings are old. New
Hall has a very modern dining room. The students
eat in this room. New Hall opened
in the 1960-s. It was a college for women only but now men can study there too. Men and women can study together in many colleges in Cambridge.
There are also modern shops and stores and a lot of bookshops for students, of course. Some shops in Cambridge are for tourists.
Cambridge is the centre of science and new technology.
It is also a centre for modern computers.

The most part of the population are students
and teachers.
There are 9500 ‘undergraduates” students at the university.
They study for a B.A./Bachelor of Arts/ degree. Postgraduate students already have a degree and they are doing research. They study for the Higher degrees. There are 1500 postgraduate students in Cambridge. Some of them will get a Ph.D./Doctor of Philosophy/ degree.
A lot of students live in the colleges. Some of them have new rooms but some rooms are six hundred years old. The students must wear gowns at the formal dinners.
The university dons/ teachers/ often live in the colleges too.

Students work hard. But during the terms they
play sports, go to the cinema and theatre and
go to the parties. Every year in April there is a boat race on the River Thames in London between Oxford and Cambridge students’ teams. Students from the two Universities go to London and shout for their teams.
During the “rag week” students work together and collect money for hospitals and for homes for children or old people. During the vacations some students take jobs, or visit other countries or stay at home and study.

Trinity College is the largest college in the
university. It has over 800 students. Kings and six
Prime Ministers have studied there and the college has many Nobel Prize winners. King Henry VIII founded the college in 1546 and gave money to it. Trinity has a very good library. It opened in 1690. The Great Court of the college is very big. On the tower there is a clock which strikes twice. Once with a high note and once with a low note.
Prince Charles was a student at Trinity, too in 1967-1970. He studied history and archaeology. His brother Prince Edward, also studied at Cambridge University.
