History The region was inhabited by the Lenape Native
Americans at the time of its European discovery in
1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine explorer in the service of the French crown, who named it "Nouvelle Angoulême" (New Angoulême). In 1664, the city was surrendered to the English and renamed "New York" after the English Duke of York and Albany In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn (until then a separate city), the County of New York

Central Park Central Park an 883-acre (3.57 km2) park
in Manhattan, is the most visited city park in
the United States, with 25 million visitors each year. The park contains a myriad of attractions; there are several lakes and ponds, two ice-skating rinks, the Central Park Zoo, the Central Park Conservatory Garden, the 106-acre (0.43 km2) Jackie Onasis Reservoir. Indoor attractions include Belvedere Castle with its nature center, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, and the historic Carousel.
