According to the place of articulation the vowel I takes up position of Front vowels: Produced with the tongue in the front of the mouth [i,ɪ] and of Central vowels: Produced with the tongue in the center of the mouth [aɪ] . These features refer to Horizontal (front – to – back) position in the mouth
According to the Vertical (high – to – low) position in the mouth the vowel I refers to High vowels: Produced with the tongue high in the mouth [i, ɪ] and to Low vowels: Produced with the tongue low in the mouth [aɪ].

letter i, for example:
